What are the General College Requirements?
The Intellectual Whitman's Sampler.
To be successful in your life you need to be a broadly-educated individual, with proficiency in skills such as effective written and verbal communication, basic mathematics, social sciences, history, natural sciences, and understanding the peoples of other cultures. Mandatory General College Requirements help you to
- sample these areas soon after your coming to Metro State,
- narrow down your interests, allow you to define your major, if you have not declared one yet,
- reconsider your major choices if you are in doubt,
- build solid foundations for higher-level college work (many GCR courses are prerequisites for desirable MSCD classes),
- meet professors outside your major, who may be critical to your career, as, for example, a strategically-placed letter of recommendation from an economics professor, may prove instrumental in your getting the dream job in a completely different field-in your major!
- meet students with interests different than your own, build new friendships,
- be exposed to subjects, perhaps once in your lifetime, that may grow into serious hobbies, or combined with your major, will create unique job opportunities,
etc., etc., etc.! The General College Requirements enhance your personal development and work cooperatively for your academic progress, that is, GCR enhance your learning among unrelated subjects.
