What is the "Machine Name" or "Computer
Name" that Help Desk staff always asks for?
All College-owned PCs and Macs have identification
tags for tracking that assist IT in the resolution of computer problems
more quickly and efficiently. This number uniquely identifies a
machine and what hardware it has. By using this identification number,
Help Desk staff also can access a computer remotely (with your consent)
and make changes or observe problems, all without having to come
to your office.
If you have this identification number available when you phone
the Help Desk, it will likely allow staff to handle the problem
you are calling about more efficiently.
Where do I find the ID Tag?
The name of each computer is located on a white mailing label on
top of the CPU (big box). It is four large characters (02MF) as
shown in the example below.
