@Metro (Vol. 4, No. 13) 1. Board of Trustees Meets Today
With talks between union and RTD officials at a standstill, an RTD strike may start as early as today. In the event of an RTD strike, increased traffic on all highways in and around the Auraria campus is expected and longer commute times are anticipated. In the event of a strike, the RTD system would operate at about 35 percent capacity. Call-n-Ride and Access-a-Ride services will operate as usual, although additional demand may lead to longer wait times. Light rail and the MallRide service on 16th Street will be canceled. Representatives from the Higher Learning Commission/North Central Association were on campus Monday to conduct an evaluation visit of the college. The visit was prompted by Metro's change in governance to an independent governing board of trustees. "It's important that we measure ourselves against outside standards and that's what accreditation does," said President Sheila Kaplan. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education makes financial aid available only to students of accredited institutions. "If we're not accredited, our students are not eligible for financial aid," Kaplan said. The NCA team is comprised of David Fuller, vice president for academic affairs at Wayne State College, and John Campbell, president emeritus and professor of animal sciences at Oklahoma State University. The NCA team met with the Board of Trustees, President Kaplan, Cabinet, Faculty Senate, the deans, staff representatives and student representatives. The team will submit its report to the NCA June 3.
The Colorado State Senate began work this week on a $5.5 billion general
fund budget for 2003-04. The proposed budget, created by the state legislature's
Joint Budget Committee, increases funding by $85 million over the current
fiscal year budget in which a total of $969 million had to be trimmed.
The budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, would reduce
the amount of general fund allocations to higher education by $100 million.
"Under the proposed State budget, the reduction to Metro's general
fund budget would be approximately $6.5 million from this year's level,"
said Mike Barnett, vice president for administration and finance. With the nation at war, the state in an economic crisis and the college forced to make painful budget cuts, many people are experiencing an increase in stress and anxiety. "Most people don't react to one moderate stressor or even two moderate stressors," said human services Assistant Professor Shawn Worthy. "But when you get everything going in a negative direction, people can start to struggle. You can't put your finger on why, but you just feel bad," he said. The proportion of college students who earn their degree in four years continues to decline, according to a survey by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles. The survey also reveals degree completion rates vary greatly according to the race and sex of the student. Overall, the survey reports that 36.4 percent of the 56,818 students surveyed were able to complete their bachelor's degree in four years. By the end of six years, 57.6 percent had completed their degree. The study also found discrepancy in degree completion rates between private and public institutions. Private institutions yield a 67.1 percent degree completion rate within four years, compared with 28.1 percent of students at public universities. Degree completion rates also vary based on race and sex. According to
the study, African American and Hispanic students have a longer degree
completion rate than average and more women finish their degrees in four
years than men. World-renowned artist and Metro State graduate Malcolm Farley will create a painting on-site to be the final auction item at the third annual Metro State Athletics Dinner and Silent Auction at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Maggiano's Little Italy at the Denver Pavilions. Instead of an in-studio creation, Farley prefers to create his art in "live-event" fashion while hundreds, even thousands, look on. As a result, Farley has become globally recognized for his ever-growing portfolio of high-profile events. Most recently, he unveiled 24 original paintings of Major League Baseball's Most Memorable Moments at the World Series. The evening will feature Men's Basketball Coach Mike Dunlap as the keynote speaker. Former NBA player and KOA Sports Zoo co-host Scott Hastings will be master of ceremonies. Denver mayoral candidates will discuss civility and community in political decision-making at a forum from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at St. Cajetan's Center on campus.
