Trustees Agree To Eliminate Proposed Policy On Student Fees At a public hearing last week on the proposed Trustees Policy Manual and Handbook for Professional Personnel, the Board of Trustees agreed to eliminate a proposed policy regarding student fees that would prohibit mandatory student fees from funding "ideological, political or religious activities or groups." Numerous students testified against the proposed policy, arguing that funds for student organizations and clubs enhance the educational experience by supporting a wide range of ideas. The trustees agreed and voted unanimously to eliminate the proposed policy. During the four-hour public hearing, trustees listened to comments about the proposed manual and handbook from faculty, staff and students. Based on those comments and further discussion by the trustees, revised drafts of the manual and handbook will be distributed to faculty, staff and students prior to the Board of Trustees' May 7 meeting. The Board expects to vote on a new policy manual and handbook in time for both to be implemented by July 1.
A bill that would change the way higher education is financed cleared the House Education Committee last week on a 9-1 vote. HB 1336, which would create student savings accounts for higher education, is now in the House Finance Committee. United States Marine Corps Sergeant David Perez is among the 52 Metro State students who have been called to active duty. Perez is with the 1st Marines in Iraq. Knowing from personal experience what it's like to be living in such harsh conditions, Leroy Chavez, director of Veteran Upward Bound, is collecting toiletries and other items to send to Perez and his unit. "Often these folks are engaged in operations for weeks and do not have access to shower facilities," Chavez said. MetroConnect has been chosen as the name of the new portal system. Through a single sign-on Internet connection, MetroConnect will provide students, faculty and staff one-stop personalized college information and services in a central location. Tickets are available for the 2003 Jazz Celebration at Metro State this
Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Sponsored by Metro State, the celebration
will focus on music education, featuring guest artists who will share
their expertise with students and teachers through concerts, master classes,
jazz history classes and clinics.
The campus community is invited Thursday to test drive "The Simulator," a virtual interactive presentation that provides real-life experience of what it's like to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Simulator, which was developed by the Center for Transportation Safety, will be available on the west side of the Tivoli from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Counseling Center, the Department of Human Services and Alpha Delta Omega.
Art lovers of all ages are invited to the Center for the Visual Arts this Saturday for "Make A Scene," in which participants will create a large-scale installation art piece. The event is in conjunction with the current exhibition, "Sandy Skoglund: Breathing Glass and Other Works," a dramatic presentation by installation artist and photographer Sandy Skoglund. The exhibition represents the first time that Skoglund, well known for her elaborate staged photographs, is working with glass. This Saturday, participants will create a Skoglund-inspired piece and have their portraits taken in the installation. The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center, 1734 Wazee St. The Skoglund exhibition runs through May 2. Giving to higher education declined for the first time since 1988, according to the latest Council for Aid to Education annual giving study. Private gifts to higher education declined 1.2 percent to $23.9 billion for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2002. Riding the Rails @ Your Library exhibit showcases the Eugene L. Copeland Rail Road Collection, a newly acquired special collection at the Auraria Library. The exhibit also features a 200-year chronology of railroads, a bibliography, artifacts and information about the railroads and their impact on Colorado history. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Colorado Railroad Museum and Caboose Hobbies and can be viewed through April 30.
