Business Students Shine
In Regional Competition
Metro State's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team took home
a second runner-up trophy at the regional competition earlier this
month in which 23 schools competed. Team members were from the Finance,
Marketing and Management departments. SIFE, a national organization
promoting free enterprise to improve the quality of life and standard
of living around the world, was organized on campus last fall after
a two-year hiatus.
Kenneth Huggins, chair of the Finance Department, is the faculty
advisor, known as a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow in the
organization. For the competition, each team delivers a presentation
on projects they have been involved in during the school year. Huggins
said the Metro State students tackled several projects, including
a pen-pal relationship with elementary school students in South
America and a world hunger bank to illustrate the economic disparity
among countries. For the hunger bank, students and faculty were
invited to a dinner, and depending upon which country they "represented,"
dined while sitting on the floor or were seated at a nicely set
table.
SIFE provides students an excellent way to gain experience and
exposure with major companies, Huggins believes. "The companies
that support SIFE hire students from SIFE," Huggins said.
