Basketball teams assess season at midway point
January 21, 2004

About midway through their seasons, both the men's and women's Roadrunner teams are looking forward to strong finishes. At 13-2, the men's team is ranked No. 11 in the nation among Division II teams and is undefeated (7-0) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition.

"The team is on schedule," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We had a solid group returning from last year, although we lost Clayton Smith and Patrick Mutombo, both quality starters and part of two national championship teams."

With a 96-68 win Saturday night over CSU-Pueblo, the Roadrunners extended their winning streak to eleven games.

"The only ranking that we care about is the last one, as we try to avoid talking about that stuff because it gets in the way," Dunlap said. "We expect to vie for the conference title, and hopefully do well in the NCAA tournament. I know we can get better from now until the end of the season as the teaching never stops."

Top scorers for the men's team are senior guards Luke Kendall (13.9 points per game) and C.J. Massingale (12.7 points per game).

The women's team has been plagued by injuries for much of the season, but Head Coach Dave Murphy is hopeful that the brunt of the injuries is behind the team, which is 5-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

"We began with a very aggressive schedule, among the top 10 toughest schedules of any team in Division II," Murphy said. In fact, the Roadrunner's first game of the year was an exhibition loss (63-102) against CU-Boulder, currently ranked No. 15 in Division I.

"Now we're getting to the meat of the season," Murphy explained. "We're not where we'd like to be, but given the injuries, we're pleased. I look for us to be in the RMAC tourney in March."

Top women scorers are junior guard Natasha Molock (13.0 points per game) and junior forward Stephenie Davis (12.5 points per game).

Next up for the Roadrunners is an away game at the University of Nebraska Kearney Wednesday at, followed by another away game at Fort Hays State Thursday. For both games, the women play at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m. Metro basketball returns to the Auraria Events Center Tuesday when the women's team hosts Chadron State at 5 p.m., and the men play Chadron State at 7 p.m.
