Nearly 1,400 new Metro State graduates received their diplomas during spring commencement ceremonies last week. Colorado Gov. Bill
Owens addressed the graduates, their families and friends. "What
you and your families have achieved isn't easy," he said. "You've
opened the door to the American Dream." The governor told the crowd that he learned many of the lessons that have served him well in life during college, such as being prepared and doing your homework. "(I also learned) it's important to think for yourself and to learn from your mistakes," he said. "Your journey in many respects begins today," Owens said. As the graduates ponder what they want to do with the rest of their lives, he encouraged them to stay in Colorado, to consider performing public service and to seize every day. "It's important to say thank you to the people who've helped you along the way - your families, Metro faculty and staff," he told the graduates. "We should all be proud of what we have here at Metro State." Interim President Ray Kieft and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bruce Benson also spoke during the ceremony, as did Courtney Cowgill, president of the MSCD Alumni Association and Kevin Burke, 2004, the President's Award recipient. Kieft congratulated the graduates and welcomed them to the ever-growing family of Metro alumni. "Many of you faced obstacles, overcame challenges and weathered some storms, but you persevered and we commend you," Kieft said. "I trust you'll stay connected with your alma mater and help shape the future for the students who follow in your footsteps." |
