1. Basketball teams assess season at midway point

About midway through their seasons, both the men's and women's Roadrunner teams are looking forward to strong finishes. At 13-2, the men's team is ranked No. 11 in the nation among Division II teams and is undefeated (7-0) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition.

2. Spring enrollment running slightly higher than last year

At the start of spring semester, enrollment is running slightly ahead of the same time a year ago. As of Tuesday, the number of state-funded, full-year, full-time enrolled students was 6,526, 1.5 percent higher than the same time last year. Total headcount, which includes state-funded and cash-funded students, was 19,284 as of Tuesday. This is 1.2 percent higher than the same time last year.

"I'm pleased that our enrollment is holding steady from a year ago," said Director of Admissions Bill Hathaway-Clark. "It appears that our conversion to a total web registration process via MetroConnect for spring 2004 has been a real success."

Acknowledging that enrollment is not increasing as quickly as in past years, Hathaway-Clark suggested that recent gains in the local economy may be convincing more students to leave school and return to the work force this semester.

Official enrollment information will be available Feb. 4.

3. Baseball players visit Children's Hospital patients

The Metro baseball team took time from a pre-season workout last week to visit patients at Children's Hospital. Coach Vince Porreco took his team to visit the hospital last year and decided it was an experience worth turning into a tradition.

"It was a great experience last year, so I decided it was something we should do each year," Porreco said.

Players spent a couple of hours visiting the young patients in their rooms or in the game room, signing autographs, playing games and talking.

"It makes me feel good to see that something as little as this can brighten up a kid's day so much," said senior third baseman Ricky Fuller. "It's a good experience for us to spend time visiting the kids," agreed senior first baseman James Edwards.

Metro to host inaugural piano celebration next weekend

Serious students and simple music lovers alike are welcome at the Music Department's inaugural piano celebration on Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1, at the King Center. The event features learning opportunities for piano students and educators, in addition to afternoon concerts for those who just like to listen to great music.

Registration, workshops and demonstrations run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. Free concerts featuring guest pianists, faculty members, judges and students begin at 4:30 p.m. both days.

"We hope this piano celebration will be the first of many wonderful programs," said event director Tamara Goldstein, assistant professor of music in piano and artist-in-residence.

The event will feature guest artist Professor Timothy Hester from the University of Houston, who will perform and present a master class. There also will be workshops on the evolution of natural piano technique and injury prevention tips, among other topics.

The event is free for current Metro students, staff and faculty. The cost for all others to attend is $35 for one day or $60 for both days, with discounts available to Denver Public Schools associates and Metro State alumni.
