3. Homecoming 2004 - join in some Metro Magic

Metro Magic, the college's 2004 Homecoming celebration, is here and the campus is in the midst of Spirit Week. The week's activities culminate this Thursday when the Roadrunners will create some basketball magic against the Fort Hays State Tigers.

Festivities kick off today (Wednesday) with a pep rally at the campus flagpole at 12:30 p.m. Join students, faculty, staff and Roadrunner team members for fun, games and free pizza.

The highlight of homecoming is the women's and men's basketball games on Thursday. The women's game begins at 5 p.m., and the men's game follows at 7 p.m. Be sure to get your tickets so you can cheer on the Roadrunners. The men's team will try to extend its winning streak to 22 games.

Game admission is free for current Metro students with a Metro ID and for children under 12. Faculty, staff and alumni can purchase general admission tickets for $5 at the door or online, or they can reserve space in the Magic Suite, a catered VIP reception, for $25 dollars. Tickets for the Magic Suite are limited, call 303-556-8320. For more information on tickets, visit www.mscd.edu and click on the Homecoming 2004 icon.

Halftime of the men's game will feature the presentation of the Homecoming Roadrunner Royalty and the Most Magical Faculty.

After the game, head over to Brauns Bar and Grill for Metro's Midnight Magic. Enjoy food, prizes, a DJ and dancing while meeting members of the team beginning at 9 p.m. For complete Homecoming information go to http://www.mscd.edu/homecoming or call the office of alumni relations at 303-556-8320.

Feature Story

World Indoor Airport hosts Angel Flight pilots

Metro's Aerospace and Aviation Science Department recently donated time in its World Indoor Airport (WIA) for local Angel Flight pilots to practice their skills in flight simulators.

Angel Flight is a nonprofit organization that arranges free air transportation in private aircraft for medical and other compelling human needs. The group links volunteer pilots with people whose health-care problems require long-distance travel to and from medical facilities.

Metro Associate Professor Robert Benda, a command pilot with the Colorado Wing of Angel Flight, hosted about 30 fellow pilots in the airplane simulators last Saturday. It was an opportunity for pilots to fly approaches, run holding patterns and practice other skills in the safety of a flight simulator.

"Angel Flight is a fantastic organization," Benda said. He added that he appreciates Metro allowing the group to use the lab and thinks it's great that the college is always looking for ways to give back to the community.

The Colorado Wing of Angel Flight has about 250 members, including pilots, mission coordinators and other support people. Angel Flight pilots fly more than 200 missions each year, and the command pilot is responsible for all costs associated with the mission.

"Angel Flight is a unique way to give back to the community," said Lori Eddlemon, Angel Flight membership coordinator. "Having a skill you can share with someone in need is a wonderful feeling."
