1. IT installs anti-spam filter

A new anti-spam filter should be up and running Monday, Information Technology has announced.

"The plan, pending different information from the vendor, is to set the filter at the lowest level of filtration, which will filter out the most easily identified spam," said Yvonne Flood, interim assistant vice president for information technology, noting that the filter may remove some e-mail that users want to receive.

"We want to encourage people to pay attention to that and let the Help Desk know if they are not receiving e-mail they want to receive," Flood said.

If the filter set at the lowest level fails to reduce the incidence of spam among Metro users, a higher level of filtration may be necessary. "In that case, users may be given the option of viewing the e-mails that have been filtered out and deciding whether or not to receive them," Flood said.

Of the approximately 110,000 e-mail messages that are sent to Metro
State users (from non Metro State users) each day, IT estimates that 65 percent to 75 percent of the messages – nearly 83,000 – are spam.

"Filtering spam is not a perfect process, and probably never will be. We will all probably continue to receive some spam e-mail. Our hope is to cut down on the amount delivered to users' inboxes by about 80 percent. If we can accomplish that, we will consider the project a success."

CU to award Benson honorary doctorate

Bruce Benson, chair of the Board of Trustees, will be awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Colorado during December's commencement, Interim President Ray Kieft announced at Wednesday's board meeting.

"Few individuals have been as involved in education as Bruce Benson has," Kieft said.

In addition to serving as chair of Metro's board, Benson chairs the Denver Public Schools Foundation and chaired the Governor's Blue Ribbon Panel on Higher Education for the 21st Century and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.
