1. Board reviews preliminary budget

2. More than 1,400 students to graduate Tuesday

Next Tuesday, 1,402 students are expected to receive their degrees during the spring commencement ceremony at the Colorado Convention Center.

3. Owens signs higher-ed voucher bill

Gov. Bill Owens signed legislation Monday to create the College Opportunity Fund, making Colorado the first state in the country to provide vouchers to college students.

Under the legislation, the state will essentially switch from funding colleges and universities to funding individuals. Vouchers, or stipends, representing general funds that previously have been provided to higher education institutions, will be given directly to eligible college students. Students will still be responsible for paying tuition. To read more go to

4. Metro State Foundation has new executive director

Diana Whye has been appointed interim executive director of the Metropolitan State College of Denver Foundation. In this position Whye will support the Foundation's Board of Directors and manage its programs and policies. To read more go to

5. Marketing profs win best paper award at national conference

Marketing professors Nancy Frontczak and Clay Daughtrey have won The Best Paper Award at last month's Marketing Educators' Association conference in California. The paper was titled "An Application of Critical Thinking Principles to Marketing Education: The Student-Driven Syllabus."

The paper is based on Frontczak's experience teaching two sections of Consumer Behavior last year, one using a traditional syllabus she prepared and the other using a syllabus the students created. To read more go to

6. Israeli official to visit Meir Center today

Metro's Golda Meir Center for Political Leadership, in conjunction with the Colorado-Israel Economic Development Council, Rockies Venture Partners and the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, is hosting a midday reception with Israel's deputy minister of trade and commerce today.

Michael Ratzon will be at the Meir Center, 1146 Ninth Street Park, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. An attorney and former soldier, Ratzon was appointed deputy minister in March 2003. He served in the 13th and 16th Knessets and is a member of the State's Ombudsman's Committee.

The Meir Center, which is operated by Metro's Political Science Department, is a nonpartisan educational project whose purpose is to expand public understanding of the important role of leadership at all levels of political and civic life, from community affairs to transnational relations.

7. Industrial Design showcases student work

The Industrial Design Department hosts its annual Design Show and Senior Presentation Wednesday and Thursday at the St. Francis Center. The design show begins Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and includes a 5:30 p.m. reception and 6:30 p.m. welcome address by Interim President Raymond Kieft.

Seniors will present their final projects Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.

The industrial design major focuses on product design in manufacturing industries, and the Metro curriculum develops both art and technology skills. An industrial designer creates new product shapes and styles or re-designs existing products.

Auraria among top workplaces for commuters

The Auraria Higher Education Center has made the inaugural list of "Colorado's Best Workplaces for Commuters," developed by the Environmental Protection Agency and a statewide coalition of government and business organizations.

The list, which features 151 employers representing nearly 90,000 workers, spotlights the state's best employers when it comes to offering outstanding commuter benefits.

The Auraria campus provides employees with a faculty/staff Eco Pass, carpool matching, reduced parking rates for carpool riders, numerous bicycle racks and shared-use parking permits.
