2. Parking garage construction begins

Temporary walkways and a construction fence are set to be in place by June 11, as AHEC begins construction on the new 850-space parking garage at the southeast corner of 9th St. and Auraria Pkwy., where the tennis courts now are. The timetable for the garage's construction calls for a March 2005 completion date.

Demolition on the tennis courts will follow within approximately two weeks, according to Dean Wolfe, AHEC executive vice president of administration. New courts will be built in the athletic field across from Lot R by early fall, Wolfe added.

3. IT launches summer initiatives

With fewer students and faculty on campus and a corresponding reduction in technology support needs, Information Technology plans to complete a number of initiatives this summer. Among them are projects designed to improve e-mail performance and MetroConnect capabilities; reduce the amount of paper and postage used on campus by increasing the use of e-mail for certain mass communications; improve access to and technology available in campus computing labs; and protect the college's information systems in the event of disaster.

Faculty Senate, Classified Council elect officers

The Faculty Senate and Classified Council have elected officers for the 2004-05 academic year.

Hal Nees, assistant professor of criminal justice, is the Faculty Senate president. He replaces Biology Department Chair Joan Foster, who served as president for three years.

David Skougstad, assistant professor of accounting, has been elected vice president. Lynn Kaersvang, assistant professor of social work, will serve as secretary and English Professor Eugene Saxe has been re-elected to serve as faculty trustee.

Nees, who served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and chaired the Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee last year, said he will focus on representing faculty interests in the college budget, the review of the general studies curriculum, personnel policies and forging a stronger relationship with the Board of Trustees.

"I look forward to the challenges of representing the faculty during the next year and am honored and pleased to have the opportunity," said Nees, who has been a full-time Metro faculty member since 1998. He graduated from Metro State in 1976 and has worked as a police officer and police chief and has managed a county-operated community corrections organization.

The Classified Council has re-elected Vonda Knox, administrative assistant to the Faculty Senate, to a second term as president. Michael Zastrow, program assistant in College Commu-
nications, has been elected vice president. Mary Emmett, administrative assistant in the Political Science Department, will serve as secretary and Vince Werner, administrative assistant in the School of Letters, Arts and Sciences, has been elected treasurer.

Knox said the council hopes to focus on hands-on activities that create a sense of community for classified staff on campus and some fundraising events.

The Council of Administrators will elect new officers later this summer.
