2. Heckler Appointed Acting Chancellor
Of UCD
Mark Heckler has
been appointed acting chancellor of the University of Colorado at Denver,
CU President Betsy Hoffman has announced.
Heckler,
who was appointed interim vice chancellor for academic and student affairs
in April, will hold the vice chancellor post until further decisions
are made by the CU Board of Regents concerning the consolidation of
the Denver and Health Sciences Center campuses.
"Mark's leadership
and insight into the distinct urban culture of the Denver
campus make him an ideal leader during this period of transition,"
Hoffman said.
Heckler joined
the CU-Denver campus in 1995 as director of the School of the Arts.
He became dean of the newly formed College of Arts & Media in 1998.
Heckler began his
new position July 1, replacing Georgia Lesh-Laurie, who is retiring.

5. Colorado Leads Country In Cuts To
State Higher Ed Funding
Colorado leads
the country in the size of state funding cuts made to higher education,
according to a survey conducted by the State Higher Education Executive
Officers.
The nonprofit group has received 44 responses to an e-mail questionnaire
asking its members the percentage change in each state's financing of
higher education for the new fiscal year, which began July 1.
Of the responses,
24 states expect decreases in state spending, with the average reduction
about 5 percent. Colorado felt the weightiest ax of the 44 states responding,
with a fall of about 26 percent in higher education funding.
Eighteen states
expect increases, with the average gain about 3 percent. California
and New York, which are expected to have substantial cuts, were not
included in the results.

Grand Prix Returning Labor Day Weekend
The Grand Prix
of Denver will again be held near campus over the Labor Day weekend.
The second annual event, this year called the Centrix Financial Grand
Prix of Denver, starts Friday, Aug. 29, and ends with the championship
races on Sunday, Aug. 31. The 1.68-mile course will close the Auraria
Parkway between 7th and 12th streets beginning Friday the 29th.
AHEC expects the
impact on campus to be minimal. "On Friday, Saturday and Sunday
I would expect some congestion in accessing campus," said Mark
Gallagher, AHEC director of parking, who suggests allowing an extra
15 minutes for the commute. "Traffic will be moving slower than
normal, but it won't be cut off."
Other than special
event parking in campus lots near the Pepsi Center, no element of the
race will be held on campus. Parking for special events such as the
Grand Prix allow AHEC to keep a lid on parking rates, Gallagher said.
"Because of income from special events we've been able to avoid
price increases," he said.
Watch for additional
information as the race weekend gets nearer.
