Feature Story

Donations to Metro State up 8 percent

Despite a decrease nationally in charitable giving to education, donations to Metro State have increased 8 percent.

For the period from July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2003, donations to Metro State totaled $2.79 million, said Mary Feller, assistant vice president for development. The 2002-03 year also marked the completion of the college's first major gift campaign, a five-year effort to raise $15 million. The campaign raised $16.9 million, with half earmarked for scholarships.

Nationally, giving to education fell by 1.1 percent to $31.64 billion in 2002, according to a recently released study from the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy, part of the American Association of Fundraising Counsel. According to the organization, this is the first annual decrease since consecutive drops in 1974 and 1975. Several factors were cited for the decline, including three years of declining stock values, conflicts abroad, recovery from the terrorist attacks of 2001 and numerous corporate bankruptcies.

At Metro State, regular supporters have helped overcome the negative economy. "We are seeing more organizations cutting back, but our regular funders have been loyal," Feller said. "We are ecstatic with our results. With a lot of hard work and some luck we were able to have a good year."
