Auraria adopts campus weapons ban
The Auraria Board
of Directors unanimously adopted a new policy banning weapons from campus
at its regular meeting last week. The policy takes effect immediately.
Revised after some
of the board directors raised objections about the broad definition
of weapons, the policy defines weapons as "any firearm, BB gun,
pellet gun, bow and arrow, cross-bow, slingshot, cross-knuckles, knuckles
of lead, brass or other metal, any bowie knife, dirk, dagger or similar
knife, or any knife having the appearance of a pocket knife, the blade
of which can be opened by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle
or other mechanical contrivance."
The revised policy
includes the following explanation: "The policy is not intended
to include standard cosmetic, wardrobe or convenience items such as
tweezers, nail clippers, mini Swiss army knives, and belts and belt
buckles."
The next step is
implementation, said Dean Wolf, AHEC executive vice president for administration.
"Now we will establish procedures put together to ensure an even
application of the policy across campus." Wolf added that campus
Police Chief Heather Coogan will meet with student judicial officers
to explain the new policy.
