4. Labor and civil rights leader on campus Thursday

Activist and grass roots organizer Dolores C. Huerta will speak on campus Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Tivoli Turnhalle. Huerta, a key figure in the Civil Rights movement, is the co-founder and first vice president emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). With the help of Cesar Chavez, she also formed the predecessor to the UFW, the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA).

Among those who are coming to hear Huerta speak are 50 students from Heritage Middle School in Longmont. The students will also spend part of the day meeting with students from Metro's College Assistance Migrant Program, which provides financial and other support to students from Colorado migrant farmworker families.

"We want to show the middle school students that it is possible to go to college," said Richard Paiz, CAMP coordinator of counseling and tutoring. "Some youth are convinced they'll never have the opportunity to attend college, but all it takes is hard work."

The middle school students, most of whom are Hispanic including some in the process of learning English, will hear from a panel of CAMP students about their experiences in getting into and attending college. Miriam Tapia from the Admissions Office and Luis Torres, chair of the Chicano Studies Department, will also address the students.

Huerta's speech is sponsored by Metro State Student Activities and the Office of Student Life at the University of Colorado at Denver.

Metro State finishes on top in soccer and volleyball

The women's soccer, men's soccer and volleyball teams each finished their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference seasons last weekend, and all three teams finished on top.

For the first time in school history, the women's soccer team, the NSCAA/adidas top-ranked Division II team in the nation, closed out regular-season play with an unbeaten regular season record of 19-0-1, defeating Colorado Christian 4-0 Sunday.

The Roadrunners will host the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament this Friday and Sunday. With a perfect regional record, the Roadrunners are the top seed. More information, including participating teams and game times, is posted at www.mscd.edu/~runners/

The men's soccer team captured its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship in college history Sunday, defeating Fort Lewis College 2-1 in the RMAC tournament championship game. The Roadrunners finished the regular season 13-7-2, a dramatic turnaround from last season's 5-11-3 finish.

Senior forward Alex Grecu was named most valuable player in the RMAC tournament. Another four Roadrunners - freshmen Preston Borrego and Antonio Porras, senior Eric Butler and sophomore Zack Cousins - were named to the all-tournament team.
In spite of the tournament championship, the team just missed making it into this weekend's NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament in San Antonio. "It wasn't a big surprise," said head coach Brian Crookham. "That tournament is about as tough as you can get." The Roadrunners finish their regular season ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II. "I'm proud of our kids and their focus," Crookham said.

The volleyball team won its third straight RMAC regular-season title Saturday, sweeping Fort Hays State at the Auraria Events Center. The Roadrunners, ranked No. 7 nationally in NCAA Division II by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, finished the season 24-5 overall and 18-1 in conference play. They will host the RMAC tournament as the top seed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Information about game times is available at
www.mscd.edu/~runners/

"The opportunity to host is special and we'd like to play well," said head coach Debbie Hendricks. "This is an important preparation as we look ahead to the regional tournament the following weekend."
