1. Flu season arrives on campus

It's flu season in Colorado and the Auraria campus is feeling the effects of the early-arriving flu bug.

"Every single appointment spot is booked," said Martha Eaton, clinical supervisor at the Health Center at Auraria. The clinic isn't tracking the number of patients suffering from the flu, but Eaton said the majority of patients are exhibiting the classic flu symptoms of sore throat, coughing, sneezing, headache and fever.

According to Eaton, if someone thinks they have the flu, they should see their doctor right away. "The best thing to do is to get to their doctor within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms," she said. Anti-viral medications can be given, which can lessen the severity to as few as three days, compared to the typical two to three weeks, Eaton added.

The best course of action is to get a flu vaccine, even though the Centers for Disease Control has said the vaccine may only be 30 percent to 80 percent effective. Last month, 1,000 people received the vaccine from the clinic. The center no longer has vaccines to give, but they may be available elsewhere in Denver.

Failing a flu shot, Eaton advises the following: "Get plenty of rest, eat healthy and practice good hygiene. Hand-washing is so, so important," Eaton said. She also recommends something now being taught in preschool. "When you sneeze, sneeze into your elbow, not into your hand."

Last year he was named one of the top 100 Spanish-language journalists in the country.

Conde, who has been a La Voz columnist for nine years, estimates he has written 1,000 columns. "I try to provide a world view from a different perspective," he said. "My goal is to give a voice to the Mexican and Central American immigrant community."

MLK award nominations due Dec. 5

The college's 13th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Breakfast and Award Ceremony will be held Jan. 23, and award nominations will be accepted until Dec. 5.

"It is important in honoring the man, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, to honor those who have followed in his footsteps," explained Kate Lutrey, assistant to the vice president for retention services, who has been involved with the event since its inauguration. "This has become one of the few traditions we celebrate," she added.

Awards are given in student, faculty/administration and community categories to honor individuals who have dedicated their lives in some way to a mission of peace and equality. Nominations are accepted from the campus and external community.
