1. Metro to launch new nursing program

Responding to the health care community's need for qualified nurses, Metro State is launching a new nursing program for those with a bachelor's degree who want to change careers. The Accelerated Nursing Program, a full-time 12-month program, will provide students who already have a bachelor's degree in any field with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and prepare them to sit for the registered nurse's exam. Classes for the first group of 32 students will begin Feb. 9. To read more go to

3. 650 students expected at Commencement Dec. 14

Nearly 650 students will receive their diplomas during commencement Sunday, Dec. 14. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th St. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is the keynote speaker. About 8,000 family and friends are expected to attend, and 55 volunteer faculty and staff are serving as marshals.

Due to convention center construction and a home Denver Broncos game, those attending the ceremony are urged to allow extra time. If parking in the free lots at Metro State, the suggested walking route to the convention center is Speer Boulevard to Colfax Avenue, left on Colfax to Welton Street, and left on Welton to the entrance.

Commencement organizers have also announced that spring commencement will be held on Tuesday, May 18, at 4 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center. Because of on-going construction projects at the convention center, the college had to switch from the traditional Sunday commencement to the Tuesday evening date. Stay tuned for more information.

Save the date for Homecoming 2004

Mark your calendars Feb. 23-27 for Metro State Homecoming 2004 Spirit Week. The week will be jam-packed with events and festivities for sports fans and scholars alike.

"Last year's homecoming was a huge success, and we look forward to building a campus tradition that unites the students, faculty, staff and alumni of this institution," said Kristin Magill, assistant director of alumni programs and services. "Our theme 'Metro Magic' reflects a college environment that we are proud of - a place of opportunity, with a wonderfully diverse campus culture and NCAA national champion basketball team."

One of the highlights of homecoming will be the pep rally on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 11:45 a.m. at the flagpole. Emceed by a local newscaster, this event will feature the Roadrunner women's and men's basketball teams, speeches from the coaches and the college president, free pizza and soda, the singing of the Roadrunner fight song and games and prizes.

Organizers anticipate that the pep rally will energize the campus for the main event of Homecoming 2004 - the big games featuring the Roadrunner women's and men's basketball teams versus Fort Hays State. Game day is Thursday, Feb. 26. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:00 p.m.

Other events planned for Spirit Week include a "Most Loved Faculty Member" essay contest, crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, concerts, campus lectures, school spirit contests and an office pride decoration contest for faculty and staff.

The "Most Loved Faculty Member" contest seeks essay nominations from students and alumni. And, for the first time, students will be able to vote for the King and Queen online this year. The winners of both these contests will be revealed during a halftime ceremony during the men's basketball game.

"We look forward to packing the stands of the Event Center on the 26th of February," Magill said.
