Protecting college desktop computers from viruses
November 12, 2003

New computer viruses are created every day. Often, these new viruses spread across the Internet and infect computers before anti -virus companies can develop and distribute the detection and disinfection programs.

Over the past few weeks, viruses have infected several machines on campus before the virus detection and disinfection program was released and applied. To protect your desktop computer from viruses, follow these simple steps.

  1. Never open any type of e-mail attachment from someone you do not know or that you were not expecting to receive. Always delete the message.
  2. Periodically run a full system anti-virus scan of your computer using the instructions below.

Windows 2000 Users:

Select the "Norton Antivirus" icon.
Select "Scan computer" in the column on the left.
In the column on the right, select C, D and E.
Click on the "Scan" button in the lower right corner.

XP Users:

Select the "Symantec" icon.
Select "Scan" and then "Scan Computer"
In the column on the right, select C, D.
Click the "Scan" button in the lower right corner.

Following these steps will help keep the college's computers virus-free.

If you have any questions about this or need additional assistance, please call the Help Desk at 6-8325.
