Members of the Metro community and the Roadrunner men's basketball team gathered Tuesday afternoon for a rally celebrating the team's 2003-04 season. The team had a very successful season advancing to the final four of the NCAA Division II championship and posting a 32-3 record, their best record since they went 33-4 in the national championship-winning 1999-2000 season. Associate Vice President for Student Life Karen Raforth and local sportscaster Scott Hastings led the crowd in congratulating the Roadrunners on an exciting season, which included a 30-game winning streak - the longest active winning streak in all of NCAA basketball for the last few weeks of the season. Raforth noted that the team members were great ambassadors and role models for Metro. "They are incredible men both on and off the court," she said. Hastings thanked the team for their representation of this institution, city and state.
Coach Mike Dunlap, who was recently named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times, thanked the Metro community and faculty for their support and Athletic Director Joan McDermott for her leadership. "We are appreciative to be part of this institution and athletic department," he said. The Roadrunners saw standout performances by several players this season, including having five players who averaged more than 11 points a game. Senior C.J. Massingale was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament Most Valuable Player. Also, senior Luke Kendall finished the season with the most steals per game in the country (3.4), and senior Lester Strong had the nation's fifth best field goal percentage (.626). |
