Auraria weapons resolution delayed
August 27, 2003

Adoption of a proposal to ban weapons on the Auraria campus was postponed at last week's Auraria Board of Directors meeting.

Concerns about language in the resolution and the broad definition of weapons prompted the board to table a vote on the resolution pending further discussion. The resolution defines weapons as "any firearm, BB gun, pellet gun, bow and arrow, cross-bow, slingshot, cross-knuckles, knuckles of lead, brass or other metal, any bowie knife, dirk, dagger or similar knife, or any knife having the appearance of a pocketknife, the blade of which can be opened by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle or other mechanical contrivance."

"I'm all for a policy like this, but the enforcement has to be consistent. If you take a Swiss army knife from one person and not from another we've got problems," said Director Ann Rice, Metro State's Board of Trustees representative.

The proposed policy makes an exception only for police officers or those who have a "legitimate purpose" directly related to their education or employment on campus. It was drafted in response to a new state law that allows Colorado residents who qualify to obtain permits for carrying concealed handguns. Weapons, the proposed resolution states, "interferes with the learning and working environment of the Auraria campus."

The Auraria Board is set to take up the matter at its September meeting.
