Veteran's Upward Bound (VUB) program at Metro State will participate in
the 14th Annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down on Nov. 4, a day when veterans'
agencies and organizations throughout Denver come together to provide
services to homeless veterans.
"Last year, 327 homeless veterans participated," said Leroy Chavez, VUB director. "It's an important community outreach activity for us to help the veterans, and we also recruit some into our program." Other agencies that participate include the regional office of the Veterans Administration, the VA Medical Center and county work force centers among others. Along with Chavez, VUB Associate Director Alton Clark and the program's work-study staff will attend the Stand Down, which takes place Thursday, Nov. 4, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., at the National Guard Armory, 52nd and Franklin. One of the three TRIO programs funded the by U.S. Department of Education, Metro's VUB program serves about 120 veterans every year. Among the services provided are academic refresher training and advising to those pursuing a GED certificate and/or preparing to enter postsecondary education. |
