Metro journalism students receive awards
April 20, 2005

Eleven Metro students have received Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The awards honor "the best in student journalism" for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. The Metro students won at the regional level and were honored at the SPJ spring regional conference in Salt Lake City on April 8-9.

The students won five regional first-place awards, which automatically enters them into the national Mark of Excellence Awards competition, to be held in Las Vegas in October.

Last September, The Met Report won the 2003 national award for Online Broadcast Stations.

The competition was open to pieces that had been published or broadcast during the 2004 calendar year. Judging was based on "overall excellence," criteria for which included: accuracy and completeness; writing style; enterprise and ingenuity; adherence to high journalistic standards; effectiveness; extenuating circumstance; creative use of the medium's unique capabilities; and adherence to the SPJ Code of Ethics.

Associate Professor of Journalism Deb Hurley, who is the regional director for SPJ and the co-advisor of the SPJ chapter at Metro, said, "The competition in our region was very stiff this year. These students were very deserving of these awards and I'm proud of them. It's nice to see students rewarded for really good work."

Metro students who won first place awards are as follows:

  • The Met Report Staff, in the Television Non-Daily Newscast category, for The Met Report
  • The Met Report Staff, in the Best All-Around Online Student Broadcast Station category, for Metreport.com
  • Michelle Gutierrez and Alex Brancard, in the Television General News Reporting category, for Drunk Driving Simulator
  • Alex Brancard and Dan Williams, in the Television Sports Photography category, for North Central Regional Finals
  • Noelle Leavitt, Dan Whittle and Alex Brancard, in the Television In-Depth Reporting category, for Coors vs. Salazar

  • Carlos Montoya, in the Television Feature category, for 2004 Film Festival Ends
  • Tom Livingston and Alex Brancard, in the Television Sports Reporting category, for Basketball Finals v. Southern Indiana
