Under the Taliban: The Compelling Stories of an Afghan Woman
On Thursday, April 7, the Metro community can hear about the struggles of Afghan families under the totalitarian regime of the Taliban. The Student Activities office, together with Student Life and Activities at UCDHSC, present “Under the Taliban: The Compelling Stories of an Afghan Woman,” a lecture by University of Nebraska at Omaha Professor Farooka Guahari at 1 p.m. in Tivoli 320. Guahari’s lecture will describe the harrowing encounters of Afghan families, their sufferings and their struggles to maintain their identities under the Taliban’s rule. Her experience typifies the kinds of human rights violations practiced against Afghans by the Taliban.

Gauhari is the author of “Searching for Saleem: An Afghan Woman’s Odyssey,” a first-person account of the national tragedy that interrupted daily life in Afghanistan after the communist coup of April 1978. In her book, Gauhari narrates her desperate attempts to find out what happened to her missing husband, Saleem, and her gradual, painful decision to leave her homeland with her three children. She is the first Afghan woman to publish a memoir in English.
