A fire truck that brews beer?
September 29, 2004

John Legnard's fire truck brewery will be featured at the Great American Beer Festival this weekend.

Got a fire in your belly? This may be the way to douse it.

John Legnard, brew master for Denver's Sandlot Brewing Company who teaches the beer segment of Assistant Professor Michael Wray's "Beer, Wine and Spirits" class, served on the "build team" for a Discovery Channel "Monster Garage" project, which converted a retired New York City fire truck into a brewery.

In its third season, "Monster Garage" is a reality television series where teams have one week to transform street vehicles into other functional items. Episode 47, for example, showcased the metamorphosis of a Rolls Royce into a portable-toilet pump. Other episodes have featured the conversion of a police car into a donut shop and a hearse into a bulldozer.

With just five days to complete a project, which in the real world would take anywhere from six months to one year to finish, Legnard's six-member team scrambled to retrofit the truck. With two-and-a-half minutes to spare, the team got the job done and pumped out what Legnard described as a "pretty good" beer. The team named the beer Otto Ale after retired New York fire truck mechanic, Otto Petersen. who served on the team.

The fire truck episode—number 46—will re-air on Oct. 4-5 on the Discovery Channel. (Check TV listings for times.) You can see the 1963 International Harvester Western States Fire Pumper and brewery at the Great American Beer Festival, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Colorado Convention Center.
