3. Metro hires experienced DPS administrator to head TQE grant


Melanie A. Haas, an educator with 34 years of experience in Denver Public Schools—20 as a teacher and 14 in administration—has been hired to head up Metro's end of its partnership with DPS on the $9.5 million Teacher Quality Enhancement (TQE) grant.

4. Health Center to survey Metro students

Drinking by college students is a well-publicized problem in Colorado. Legislative proposals this session for the tracking of beer keg sales, banning of open containers of alcohol in most vehicles, and tougher penalties for buying alcohol for minors all relate to the state's high-profile drinking-related deaths on college campuses last year.

Auraria officials encourage the Metro community to allow extra time if coming to campus this weekend due to the NBA All-Star events, Friday-Sunday.

6. And speaking of the NBA ... professor explores basketball history

With NBA All-Star Game festivities starting to overtake the city, much is being made of the fact that the entire country will be watching Denver this week. History Professor Dolph Grundman believes the future of basketball is even bigger.

7. Accounting students provide free tax assistance

Students in accounting instructor Robert Jaros' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) class are getting some real-world experience by preparing tax returns for people who cannot afford professional assistance.

Here's a dismal statistic: Fewer than half the Hispanic kids who start high school in Colorado graduate. In Denver it's fewer than one third.
