3. Number of applications for Metro president nears 200

After taking a break over the summer, the President Search Advisory Committee is back at work and plans to present a short list of candidates to the Board of Trustees for further review at its Sept. 8 meeting.

With about 50 nominations and applications coming in over the summer, the committee now has a total of 188 applicants for the position.

Most applicants come from higher education, said Search Advisory Committee Chair John Buechner. "We have some applicants from nontraditional areas such as law and corporations, but most are from academia."

Applicants from higher education include sitting college presidents, provosts and other top executives, as well as vice presidents of student affairs and academic affairs as well as deans. The committee has received applicants from all over the country, with a greater concentration from California and the East Coast.

4. IT Tip: X does not mark the spot

Clicking on the red X in the upper right-hand corner of your computer screen does not log you out of MetroConnect, rather it only closes the Web browser. Consequently, your MetroConnect session will remain running and active in the background until your time-out is reached. Idle open sessions take up valuable computer resources and affect the performance of the network, so making sure that you truly log out benefits all MetroConnect users.

To log out, click on the "logout" icon in the top right corner of the MetroConnect window.

5. A busy summer indeed

Even though many of Metro's faculty and students were away from campus, it was nevertheless an eventful summer. Among the key announcements was that the college will observe a fall break each year during the week of Thanksgiving. Also, Interim President Ray Kieft announced he is seeking the president's job on a permanent basis. In addition, Information Technology launched several new initiatives to improve network performance.

7. Earth Science Club initiates recycling program

Metro State's Earth Science Club (ESC), in cooperation with the Auraria Campus, has initiated a program to encourage students to recycle cell phones and laser and inkjet cartridges from computers, copiers and fax machines.

The free, year-round program will allow participants to mail empty ink cartridges directly to a recycling facility. Pre-addressed, postage-paid bags are posted on public bulletin boards around campus. To recycle larger cartridges from computers and fax machines, campus offices can contact the ESC to arrange for a member to pick up the used items.

In addition, old cell phones can be dropped off at Science 231, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. They will be sent directly to a cell phone recycling facility.

According to ESC, more than 400 million used cartridges are discarded into landfills. Recycling saves two quarts of oil per cartridge and 80 percent in energy costs of manufacturing new plastics.

ESC hopes the Auraria Campus recycling program, developed by Rocky Mountain e-Cycle, will raise awareness of the benefit of recycling and raise funds for the club. The group uses any recycling funds raised for field trips, conferences and other activities, in addition to donating 20 percent to charity.

For more information, contact the ESC at 303-556-3143 or esc@studentactivities.mscd.edu.
