Righting a historical wrong: Camp Hale's WACs
In
1990 when historian Monys Hagen moved to Denver for her job at Metro,
she made it a priority to visit Leadville and Camp Hale, where her mother
was stationed as a WAC (Women's Army Corps) during WWII. At the Leadville
Heritage Museum, she took in the display on Camp Hale and 10th Mountain
Division and then asked a curator about the women stationed there.
No women were stationed
at Camp Hale, she was told.

3. Enrollment
up for 4th year in a row
Official numbers are in and college enrollment has increased again,
marking the 12th consecutive semester of enrollment growth for Metro
State. As of census date Sept. 8, the total number of students enrolled
is 20,791, a 2.8 increase over the same period last fall. Similarly,
the number of full-year full-time equivalent students rose to 6,906,
2.6 percent higher than the same point last fall.
"While the
growth is not as large as in previous fall terms, it is greater than
we predicted given the trends of the most recent two terms and the strengthening
economy," said Director of Admissions Bill Hathaway-Clark. "I
don't think we could have asked for a better resulta healthy increase
and still able to handle the increased demands on classroom space and
services. However, we are nearing the critical point of space and resources
that need to be addressed, especially when our UCD and CCD colleagues
are experiencing similar growth pains."

Ride
with pride
Celebrate Fall
Fest and get a voucher for a Metro State license plate at the Office
of Alumni Relations' new digs, 1020 Ninth Street Park, Sept. 15-16,
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Offered through
the Metro State Alumni Association, the Metro logo license plates normally
carry a $50 donation fee. But during the two-day open house, the Alumni
Relations office will waive the fee for all faculty and staff who drop
by.
"We're doing
this as a thank you to faculty and staff for all their hard work,"
explains Lynne Gefre, interim assistant director of alumni annual support.
"We wanted to show our appreciation."
To redeem your
voucher, visit your county's motor vehicle office and bring along your
vehicle registration and current plates. You will pay your standard
license and registration fees along with a one-time specialty-plate
cost of $25. This is a one-time only offer and is available only to
faculty and staff who attend the Alumni Relations open house. For information,
call 303-556-8320.

Grant
workshop seeks participants, changes location
Faculty and staff
are welcome to attend a grant training workshop Sept. 17 hosted by the
Office of Sponsored Programs. The workshop is for participants in OSP's
Grant Mentoring Program, but OSP Director Betsy Zeller emphasizes that
any Metro employee who is interested may attend.
The session is Friday, Sept. 17, 1-4:30 p.m., in NC 1204. It was originally
scheduled in the Golda Meir Center, but was moved to accommodate more
participants.
Theodore Hodapp, program director at the National Science Foundation
(NSF) in the Division of Undergraduate Education, is the trainer. He
will lead a one-hour interactive session on producing successful grant
applications, followed by a mock-panel review where participants read
and evaluate an actual NSF proposal.
Please RSVP to Kathy Cooper at coopekat@mscd.edu to reserve a seat.
