DOE hands Metro a “big” check
In what has become a quintessential rite of any successful fund-raising effort,
a representative from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) visited Metro
Sept. 21 to hand over a colossal-sized version of a check for DOE grant money
awarded to the college.

program celebrates 30th anniversary
In 1974, Metro State
launched one of the country’s first programs to train undergraduates
for careers in the nonprofit sector. To celebrate its first 30 years, the Center
for Nonprofit Organization Administration (NOA) has launched a $10,000 scholarship
endowment campaign and awarded its first Nonprofit Professional Scholarships.

“American
Mind” Program Ready to Work with Area Schools
After several
months of preparation, the “An Adventure of the American Mind” program
in Colorado (AAM-Colorado) is ready to start working with area school
districts to help educators and students discover the treasures of
the Library of Congress.

Deadline
is Friday for Golf Classic
The deadline
to sign up for the 18th Annual Roadrunners Golf Classic is Friday,
Sept. 24. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Monday, Oct.
4, at the Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster. Shotgun begins
at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $110 per person and covers all golf fees, cart
use, beer and the BBQ. Tournament proceeds go to Metro’s Student-Athlete
Scholarship Fund.

Student-produced
media earn national awards
Kudos to the
staff of the 2003-04 “The
Met Report” online student
broadcast station and The
Metropolitan student newspaper for their
recent national awards.
After having
won a regional Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional
Journalists, “The Met Report” went on to
win the national award at the SPJ’s national convention in
New York City September 9-11.
In addition, The Metropolitan garnered a national second place
award in the General Excellence - College Newspaper category
of the National
Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The Met staff
and Student Media Director Doug Conarroe learned of their award at
the organization’s national convention in Denver on Sept. 17.
Cal State-Chico took the top honor.
