2. The ABC's of giving

Last week, the kindergarten class at Graland Country Day School decorated 120 gift bags, stuffing them with watercolor sets, crayons, scissors and other art supplies for the children in the Metro Center for Visual Art's ABC program for disadvantaged kids.

3. More accolades for women's soccer coach and team


Danny Sanchez, head coach of the national champion women's soccer team, has been named Midwest Regional Soccer Coach of the Year. The award puts him in contention for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II national honors.

In only his third year at Metro, Sanchez has coached the Roadrunners to a 65-5-4 record. This year's team ended its season with a 25-1 record and the NCAA Division II Championship.

In addition, highlights from the team's NCAA Division II championship game in Texas on Dec. 4 will be part of the nationally televised show "CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA," on Dec. 25 at 1:30 p.m. on KCNC Channel 4.

4. Kudos to Faculty and Staff

A Metro professor and former professor have been acknowledged for their significant contributions in the areas of civil rights and service to traditionally disadvantaged communities

5. Photojournalism student wins national award

Metro photojournalism student Evan Semon has won first place in the Richard Mahon Student Portfolio category from the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar for his work at the Rocky Mountain News.

6. Mayor nominates CJC chair to police oversight board

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has nominated Professor Joe Sandoval, chair of the Criminal Justice and Criminology Department, to serve on the new Citizen Oversight Board (COB), one of the components of Denver's enhanced oversight system that was ratified by voters in November.

Sandoval and the six other nominees will appear before the City Council Safety Committee today for confirmation. (One of the other nominees is Metro trustee Gin Butler.)

A 21-year faculty member at Metro, Sandoval is a licensed attorney and previously spent six years as an Arvada police officer. Earlier this year, he served on the Mayor's Police Reform Task Force. He is a former chair of the Denver Public Safety Review Commission and board member of the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement.

7. IT outages over break

Below is a list of the outages Information Technology has scheduled during the winter break, Dec. 24-Jan. 2.

  • 5 p.m., Dec. 26 through noon, Dec. 27 e-mail will not be available
  • 6 p.m., Dec. 29 through noon, Dec. 30 MetroConnect, e-mail and Calendar will not be available
  • Dec. 30-31 there will be daily, sporadic network outages affecting all computing services in Tivoli, South Classroom, West Classroom, Arts and Seventh Street buildings.

8. Campus Mail posts its holiday schedule

Campus Mail Services has announced its revised schedule for the holiday season.

9. Remember, new e-mail system to go live

Metro's new e-mail system on MetroConnect will go live Dec. 30. So, if you use Outlook at work and want to have your Outlook e-mail contact list available for use with the new system when you log on to MetroConnect at home or on the road, you will need to copy the list before Dec. 24. Follow the directions at

http://www.mscd.edu/metroconnect/helpdocs/pdf/importingContacts.pdf.

Outlook users who don't send a copy of their contact lists to MetroConnect by Dec. 24 will have to manually input their contact addresses one at a time once the new e-mail system has deployed.
