Hot times on campus

Kayakers can finetune their skills at a kayak pool clinic June 5-6.

Working this summer? Then take advantage of the cool activities on campus with which to pass hot days:

Go with the flow: The Health Center at Auraria is offering lunchtime yoga and Pilates classes in the St. Francis Atrium for free, noon-1 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Click here for a schedule (http://www.mscd.edu/student/resources/health/healthymoves/).

Get out! The Outdoor Adventure Program offers a range of programs designed to promote wilderness skills and experiences. Hike some of Colorado's famous Fourteeners, visit national wilderness areas and paddle on Colorado River in the annual canoe/kayak trip, Aug. 12-14. (You can even brush up your kayak skills at the Kayak Pool Clinic, June 5-6, noon-3 p.m. in the PER pool.) Many of these events are free. For information, call 303-556-2391.

Learn leadership skills: The Metro State Leadership and Cross-Cultural Adaptability Retreat offers students the chance to identify leadership styles, participate in a cross-cultural adaptability assessment, challenge themselves on a low-elements ropes course and camp with others. The free event runs June 10-12. Registration deadline is June 6. For information, call 303-352-5071.

Climb higher: Watch for the opening of the new 1,300-square-foot climbing wall in the Fitness Center, June 1. Fitness Center hours for the summer are: Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Got tent? The Outdoor Adventure Center rents all manner of outdoor equipment by the day, weekend or week. Rental items include backpacks, rock shoes, cook stoves, headlamps, sleeping bags, wet suits and canoes. Rental shop hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 303-556-2391.

Listen: The Denver Women's Chorus is in concert at the King Center on June 4, performing at 3 and 8 p.m.

Watch: Starz Global Lens 2005 series concludes June 9 at the Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli. The series showcases films from developing countries. Rock on: Kick-off Metro's 40th anniverary celebration on Aug. 26 with a fundraising concert featuring legendary composer, performer and Beach Boys' member Brian Wilson at the Universal Lending Pavilion, 1700 7th Street, on the grounds of the Denver Pepsi Center. Proceeds benefit the Metro State Athletic Scholarship Fund. For more information go to gometrostate.com.
