Kudos to faculty and staff
March 2, 2005

Here are two examples of Metro State professors whose expertise is sought by their peers and the community.

Richard M. Swanson, visiting professor of psychology, participated in the Grand Rounds of the Jan. 18 Web cast for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Commission (WICHE) Mental Health Program. His 90-minute clinical presentation was on "The Prevention and Intervention of Youth Violence: The Importance of Local Mental Health Services." Twenty-one sites received the Web cast, with WICHE members who are therapists and mental-health policymakers at the state level participating.

Monica Blackmun Visona, associate professor of art, has been selected to lecture in April at the international symposium "Emerging Scholarship in African Art" sponsored by Columbia University. Her paper, "Redefining 20th Century African Art: The View from the Lagoons of Cote d'Ivoire," will be based upon her research at the National Museum of African Art, where she is a 2004-05 Senior Fellow of the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to this lecture, Visona has delivered a paper on African architecture at the annual meeting of the College Art Association in Atlanta, Ga. and has given lectures to docents and the general public at the National Museum of African Art. She will be speaking to classes at Montgomery College, the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Kentucky before returning to Denver.
