| Here's
a sampling of some of the ways that Metro's faculty and staff are being
recognized by their peers and building the college's reputation in the
community.
Janet Maestas, who runs Veterans' Services in the Office of the Registrar, has received the National Association of Veteran Program Administrators (NAVPA) President's Award. Maestas was also reelected to the NAVPA board of directors where she will chair the membership committee and serve on the technology committee. Computer information systems professors, Joe Morrell and Norm Pence, each received a "Best Paper Award" at the October International Business and Economics Research Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morrell's presentation outlined a procedure and theorem for bottleneck scheduling of an "n-stage" production process. The procedure and theorem has applications in manufacturing and service operations and has been used by a major Colorado corporation. Pence's presentation was on his technique to eliminate "degeneracy" in the transportation problem. This technique will also appear in future editions of management science and operations research textbooks and can be used in computer applications that address the transportation problem. Renee Ruderman, assistant professor of English, received a $1,000 first prize from New Millennium Writings in Knoxville, Tenn. for one of her poems. In addition, her newly published poetry chapbook, Certain Losses, was a finalist in the New Millennium Writings national chapbook competition. History Professor
Adolph H. Grundman's book, "The Golden Age of Amateur Basketball:
The AAU Tournament, 1921-1968," was just published by the University
of Nebraska Press. The book traces the glory years of the Amateur Athletic
Union (AAU), its ideals and ultimate collapse. |
