Suicide in women is topic of Morrow Lecture
October 20, 2004
The public is invited to this year's Shane Marie Morrow Endowed Lecture, "Cultural Perspectives on Women's Suicidal Behavior" by Silvia Canetto, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Colorado State University. The lecture will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, 9-10 a.m., in PL M-205.

Widely published on culture and women's suicide, Canetto specializes in diversity issues in suicidal behaviors and in hastened death, diversity issues in adult development, aging and end-of-life, and teaching about human diversity. She is originally from Italy and received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University Medical School.

The Morrow Lectureship honors Shane Morrow, a Metro psychology student who died in a 1999 automobile accident. Her mother, Dr. Gayle Civish, a psychologist herself, established the lectureship as part of Shane's legacy to others. According to Civish, as a student Shane had shown particular concern for oppressed groups of Native Americans and the educationally marginalized. The lectureship provides professional women the opportunity to participate in teaching psychological perspectives that are inclusive and sensitive to the oppressed.
