Noel Professor Nontombi Naomi Tutu arrives Sunday

Nontombi Naomi Tutu is the eleventh scholar chosen as the Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Visiting Professor.

 

International human relations scholar Nontombi Naomi Tutu comes to Denver and Metro State Sunday and Monday, Oct.17-18, as the 2004 Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Visiting Professor. Her visit includes two lectures to which the public is invited.

The daughter of South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nontombi Naomi Tutu was born in Krugersdorp, South Africa. She founded and was the chairperson of the Tutu Foundation, which from 1985 to 1990 assisted South African refugees and exiles. She has worked on many issues related to education and professional opportunities for black women in South Africa. As a program coordinator at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town, she was responsible for programs on race and gender and gender-based violence in education. She currently is director of International Relations and Programs at Tennessee State University. Tutu's Sunday lecture is 11 a.m. at Shorter Community AME Church, 3100 Richard Allen Court. A reception and question-and-answer period will follow. Tutu also will sign her book "The Words of Desmond Tutu."

On Monday, Tutu will hold a lecture and discussion from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in St. Cajetan's Center. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call Professor C.J. White at 303-556-8470.
