Two scholarships, totaling more than $100,000, have been established recently at Metro for students in business, vocational and nursing disciplines. The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation Scholarship Program will annually award between $10,000 and $14,000 to be divided among seven Metro students. The foundation established the scholarship to accomplish two primary goals: to build community relations in areas in which the retail store Lowe's is well-established and in areas of future store expansion; and to support the vocational and business disciplines. Metro was chosen as the first college or university in Colorado to participate in the Lowe's program. The first seven recipients from Metro were chosen this semester. Their disciplines include civil and electrical engineering technology, economics, industrial design, management and marketing. Metro graduate Susan Rae has established the Jessie B. Connett Memorial Scholarship to honor her great-grandmother. Jessie Connett was the first woman M.D. to practice medicine in Alaska, after being refused entry into the licensed practitioner files in Colorado. Rae, who graduated in 1991 with an individualized degree, established the scholarship to assist nursing students at Metro. She has made a $100,000 bequest commitment, which will fund at least two full-time students. |
