Give these students a hand
March 9, 2005

From a scholarship to study in Germany to a Critics Award in theatre, Metro students are making a name for themselves.

German
Tim Kish, who is majoring in German and political science, has been selected for the 2005-06 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program for Young Professionals. Focusing on cultural exchange, the scholarship program is designed to give participants an understanding of everyday life, education and professional training in Germany and the United States. It is intended primarily for young adults in business, technical, vocational and agricultural fields.

Kish is one of 75 Americans chosen and the fourth Metro State student ever selected. Beginning in late July, he will spend 12 months in Germany, including two months intensive training in the German language, four months of classroom instruction at a German University of Applied Sciences, and five months on a career internship.

“Tim will make an excellent cultural ambassador for Colorado,” said Lawrence Glatz associate professor of German.

In the U.S. the program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State. In Germany the program is funded through the Administration of the Bundestag. To read more about the program go to http://www.cdsintl.org/cbyx/index.htm

Theatre
Students in Metro’s theatre program also are being recognized, including Rachel Lanning, who has won a $1,200 scholarship from the Rocky Mountain United States Institute of Theatre Technology to attend the national USITT conference this month in Toronto, Canada.

In addition, two students who attended the recent five-state regional conference of the Rocky Mountain Theatre Association won $100 awards. Matt Hause received the Best Acting Partner Award and Kimberly Luckie earned the Critics Award.

Political Science
Finally, six political science students received awards in February for their participation in the Model Arab League Student Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City. The students represented the country of Libya in a mock council, for which they were required to write, present and defend resolutions.

The entire team won an honorable mention for best delegation, and each team member won an award for representation on individual committees. “In Metro’s 15 years of participation in the conference, this is the first year that each Metro student won an award,” said department Chair Robert Hazan.

Megan Morris and Dan Cohen won honorable mention for representation of Libya on the social affairs committee; Yvette Orin-Martinez and Stephen Noriega won the Outstanding Delegation award for representation of Libya on the joint defense council; and Kalilah Shelton and James Taylor won the Outstanding Delegation award for representation of Libya on the heads of state council.
