Not your father's Tivoli: Work proceeds on the Tivoli restoration
May 25, 2005

The Tivoli's west side will be more pedestrian friendly once the turnaround is eliminated and the sidewalks widened.

The project, which began in September 2003, has returned the Tivoli to its natural, red brick exterior.

The brewery became the Auraria Student Union in 1994.

The Tivoli has seen a lot of changes in its 139-year history, the latest of which are proceeding through the summer. Built in 1866 as a brewery, the Tivoli brewed its last beer in 1966. The building became the student union for the Auraria campus in 1994. The latest round of repairs and renovations began two years ago.

Look for these updates at the Tivoli this summer:

  • The building's west face will become more attractive and pedestrian friendly over the next couple of weeks, when work concludes on the front pedestrian area. The sidewalks are being widened and the vehicle turnaround area is being eliminated.
  • By July 1, the Auraria Campus Bookstore renovation will be complete. The store has a new entry and more professional retail finishes. Other changes include the separation of books, logo merchandise and other institution-specific goods into individual color-coded departments, making it easier for students and faculty from each school to find the materials they need. Look for Metro State and UCD stock downstairs and CCD books and products upstairs, along with the campus computer department.
  • Long-standing problems with Tivoli's heating and air systems are being resolved so the building will be more comfortable and energy efficient.
  • What's that smell? The building's old roof is being pulled up and a new one is being installed, a process that's causing a heavy tar odor.
  • Check out Sigi's Pool Hall and Arcade. Come July, Sigi's will host a grand opening to celebrate its new pool tables, games (including Tekken 5) and bar stools.
  • The new parking complex located on the Tivoli's north side will add space for 600 vehicles when it opens fall semester.

Watch @Metro for news of the Tivoli's grand reopening in late September or early October after the project is completed.
