| The
President's Cabinet has established a policy regarding the use of wireless
networking devices to ensure that the college's network is not compromised.
"The use of unauthorized or improperly configured wireless devices poses a threat to the security and stability of the college network," said George Middlemist, interim vice president of Information Technology. "This policy will help keep the network and college data safe for all Metro users." The policy gives sole responsibility and authority to deploy wireless networking equipment to Information Technology in coordination with the Auraria Cooperative Technology Committee (ACTC). In addition, IT-approved wireless networks will have priority over other wireless networks, while existing networks for which approval is not obtained will be shut down. "If we have to shut down a network, we'll make every effort to replace it at the same level of service," Middlemist said. College departments wishing to set up a wireless network must submit a request to IT for evaluation. If the request meets policy requirements, it will be forwarded to ACTC for approval. The critieria for evaluation can be found at http://www.mscd.edu/%7Einfotech/policies/. The policy also gives IT authority to disconnect, without prior notice, any wireless access point that is malfunctioning, endangering the security of the college network, or being used in violation of published college policy. "Before permanently disconnecting a device, IT staff will work with the department that is hosting it to resolve the security concerns, if possible," said Middlemist. Middlemist also noted that since many departments wish to use wireless technologies, IT has committed to making as many buildings wireless as possible during the next few months. "The overall goal is to help meet the departments' needs to have wireless access for faculty and staff while protecting the college's network and computing resources." |
