Fortieth facts and features
August 31, 2005

To help Metro State celebrate its 40th anniversary throughout the 2005-06 academic year, each week @Metro will bring readers a fun or significant fact from years past. Our 2nd installment:

Calling it a "toe-in-the-water proposition," on Sept. 7, 1975, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education granted Metro State $11,619 for athletic scholarships. This was the first state money for intercollegiate athletics in the school's ten-year history. Noting that Metro State students were typically older and had jobs, the Denver Post remarked: "…much of the potential athletic talent is (either) too old or too tired to take on UCLA, except perhaps in pinball."
