Deadline for Grant Mentoring Program is Sept. 23
September 7, 2005

The Grant Mentoring Program (GMP) is accepting applications from interested faculty until Sept. 23.

Sponsored by Academic Affairs and housed in the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), the GMP matches faculty with little or no grant writing experience with mentors who have a proven track record in securing grants. The Grant Mentoring Program offers mentors and mentees a small stipend for participating in the program, which includes training sessions, drafting and submitting a grant proposal (with the assistance of a mentor) and securing internal approvals for the submission.

The program is currently accepting its third cohort of faculty mentees. So far, out of the 10 faculty members who have gone through the program, seven have submitted grant proposals and two are still in process. In just one year, the GMP has brought in a total of $380,991 in research dollars, which includes Metro’s share of Assistant Physics Professor Kamran Sahami’s NSF grant made in conjunction with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. (See story in this issue.)

Five slots are available for faculty interested in the GMP. Two positions are open for researchers who want to write proposals related to the institutional priorities of undergraduate research, interdepartmental collaboration or something of college-wide benefit. One slot is slated for existing mentees to resubmit grants. And two are available for individual research projects.

“It’s really worthwhile,” says OSP Director Betsy Zeller, “to get people trained so they can be ready to pursue opportunities.”
