Do You Know: Brian Glotzbach, student trustee
July 20, 2005

Brian Glotzbach intends to use his position as student trustee to galvanize students in support of more funding for higher education.

Brian Glotzbach, the new student trustee on Metro State’s board, may be the prototypical Metro State student. Thirty years old and a junior, the athletic training major sampled a few colleges and disciplines before settling in to a career helping athletes overcome injuries.

“My problem,” he says, “is I’m interested in too many things.”

Born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Glotzbach graduated from a California high school where he played varsity basketball and ran track. An accomplished guitar player, he earned an associate’s degree in music from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., after which he returned to Colorado to fulfill a lifelong goal of attending CU.

In Boulder he started as an economics major and switched to geography before realizing that he didn’t know what exactly he wanted to do. So he quit. A retail job with a sporting goods chain provided the answer.

Stumbling onto a catalog for Metro State, he discovered that the college had one of only a few athletic training programs in the state. And he enrolled.

“I love it,” Glotzbach says. “I’ve received great career advice. I’ve been very pleased with the quality of my instructors. They’ve worked hard to make it a quality program.” This summer, he’s taking a class and working with the Drop-In Recreation and Physically Challenged Programs at Campus Recreation.

Glotzbach, who served on the student senate last year, was elected student trustee by Metro State’s student body in April and succeeded student trustee Stephen Hay in June. He wanted the position in order to raise student awareness about college governance and to help galvanize students to take a more active role lobbying state legislators for funding.

“The more students who voice their concerns,” he says, “the better the chance that we’ll see funding increases in the future.”
