| If you’re planning to come to campus Friday, Saturday or Sunday, Aug. 12-14, you might want to walk or take Light Rail. The Denver Grand Prix is scheduled for that weekend, and race coordinators anticipate that Auraria will provide 90 percent of the parking for the large-crowd events. The race course is the same as it has been in the past, and its road closures are expected to severely restrict access to campus, particularly from the north. The race schedule has been expanded and there are multiple large-scale events scheduled prior to and during race days (and nights) that are designed to generate interest in the races and bring large crowds to the area. “There will be no parking availability or shuttle service near Coors Field as there has been in the past,” says Jeff Stamper, director of Auraria Campus Event Services. So most of the Grand Prix crowds will be parking on campus. Sergeant Greg Stahl of Auraria Campus Police says the campus police will be at full force for this event, having cancelled vacations and other time off for their officers to provide maximum police coverage. Stahl says his office has avoided scheduling any other events that would require coverage that weekend. Grand Prix officials moved the event from the Labor Day weekend to mid August to accommodate fall semester schedules at Metro State and the other Auraria institutions. Questions about
the Grand Prix and its impact on the campus should be directed to Stamper
at 303-556-2750, stamperj@ahec.edu.
