Student sees bench design move from sketchpad toward reality

Feb 20, 2012

Some of the work done by design students never gets off the sketchpad. Not so for industrial design major Paul Tucker.

He created the design for a concrete, steel and wood bench for the Student Success Building. Two or three benches will be fabricated and installed outside the building, depending on cost, said Ken Phillips, chair of the Industrial Design Department.

Tucker was among 20 or so students, most in a model-making class, who submitted designs to a committee that judged his the best. He won $2,000 from the Student Success Building fund “with the understanding that he needs to do the work to actually get it fabricated and installed,” said Phillips, who will help him in that process.

Tucker said he spent about 25 hours on the project, including the sketch, the scale model and computer renderings. The design, he said was inspired by the northwest section of the building that cantilevers over the street.

“I'm excited to have my design be a part of the Student Success Building,” he said. “It's very gratifying to have a concept that I thought up receive such positive feedback, and for it to become a reality.”
