Lt. Gen Eric B. Schoomaker, the U.S. Army’s top doctor, has been selected as speaker for Metro State’s 2011 Fall Commencement.
More than 1,200 students are expected to graduate on Dec. 18 at the Colorado Convention Center.
In December 2007, Schoomaker was sworn in as the 42nd Army Surgeon General. He also has served as the commanding general at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and as commander of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command.
Schoomaker graduated from the University of Michigan in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina from 1976-78, followed by a fellowship in hematology at Duke in 1979. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1975 and completed his Ph.D. in human genetics in 1979.
Schoomaker has been awarded numerous medals, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He also has been honored with the Order of Military Medical Merit.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and hematology.
