A three-week textbook drive is underway on campus to benefit Aksum University, located in Aksum, Ethiopia -- Denver’s “sister city.” The book drive is one of the results of a trip by five Metro State employees last month to learn about the history, peoples and cultures of Ethiopia.
“Our goal is five to six tons of textbooks,” says Ali Thobhani, executive director of the Office of International Studies and chair of the African and African American Studies Department, who led the trip.
Thobhani, along with Psychology Professor Mary Ann Watson, Assistant Professor of Psychology Layton Seth Curl, Academic Media Producer Scott Houck and English Professor James Aubrey traveled to the area under the College’s partnership with the university that officially began in March 2009.
Various locations around campus will serve as book drops, but they may also be delivered to the Psychology Department. Used and new books, as well as books for adults and children, are being collected. It is anticipated that the Department of Defense's Funded Transportation Program will assist in shipping all the collected books to the port of Djibouti.
The Ethiopia Partnership Support Committee will have a table in the Tivoli Student Union at the Comcast Cares Day for those wanting to donate books on that day.
