Design for Student Success Building features open spaces

The design for the first building in Metro State’s Neighborhood Master Plan is beginning to take shape, and groundbreaking may occur as early as December 2010.

RNL, which is leading the eight-firm design consulting group on the Student Success Building, delivered a PowerPoint presentation on the schematic design to the Board of Trustees at their April 7 meeting.

The Student Success Building is estimated to add 145,000 square feet for classrooms and faculty offices for the College, and give students a central location for multiple support services.

According to Director of Facilities Planning and Space Management Sean Nesbitt, the Student Success Building Committee has had “deliberate discussions” about how to best use the space, with open space being a continuing theme.

Since the summer, the cross-functional, college-wide committee has met twice a month, gathering and processing information from all departments and divisions to be housed in the new building. To help envision open office spaces, RNL provided a group tour of an open office space in downtown Denver. Some departments have visited several open office spaces, and returned to the committee with their suggestions.

When it comes to deciding office layouts, he says the committee is looking at the role of each office. “We’re not looking at titles. We are looking at certain areas that address the functions of advising and personal matters.”

To help mitigate any privacy issues, Nesbitt says large and small conference rooms will be integrated throughout the space. For example, small conference rooms may feature four seats and a telephone.

The Student Success Building is scheduled to open April 2012.
