Fun 45th Fact: For a time, Metro State was “the invisible campus” in downtown Denver

Apr 11, 2011

For its first decade, Metro State students and faculty conducted the business of education in a hodgepodge of rented space, scattered across downtown. Newspapers called Metro State “the invisible campus.”

By the time Metro State moved into its permanent home on the Auraria Campus in 1976, Roadrunners had grown to occupy more than 30 buildings in downtown Denver. Below are some of those places (see buildings) that housed faculty, staff, and students.

The dots provide a visual of the many addresses of Metro State in its early years.
1. Aaron Building – 1447 Tremont Place
2. Cherokee Building – 1090 Cherokee Street
3. Child Care Center – 1038 & 1044 Cherokee
4. College Bookstore – 520 West Colfax Avenue
5. College Center – 1339 Elati Street
6. Court Place Building - 1421 Court Place
7. Double A. Building – 1300 Glenarm Street
8. Elati Building – 1411 Elati Street
9. Forum Building – (Administration Building) – 250 West 14th Ave
10. Fox Building – 1435 Fox Street
11. Glenarm Building – 1222 Glenarm Place
12. Gold Building – 1440 Fox Street
13. Library – 1421 Elati Stret
14. Olympic Building – 1330 Fox
15. Press Building – 1340 Glenarm Place
16. Speer Building – 1360 Speer Boulevard
17. Student Activities Center – 710 West Colfax Avenue
18. Three Thirty Three Building -- 333 West Colfax Avenue

This time next spring, many of the student services that were once scattered across downtown -- and are now spread across the Auraria campus -- will be offered in “one-stop shopping” at the Student Success Building, the first building on campus dedicated specifically to Metro State.
