Update: Second survey planned for College name

Nov 7, 2011

Metro State will conduct a second online survey starting Tuesday, Nov. 8, of three new names for Metro State that include the word metropolitan.

The survey will reach out to 5,000 students, faculty and staff as well as a number of alumni and community leaders to test the following names:

· Denver Metropolitan State University

· Denver State Metropolitan University

· Metropolitan Denver State University

After having conducted research last spring, the Board of Trustees had proposed the name Denver State University, which resonated with students but did not receive the full support of alumni or the community. Subsequently, the Strategic Name Initiative Committee (SNIC) was formed in June to do more outreach with community leaders and the leadership of the other higher education institutions in Colorado as well as members of the Metro State community—particularly alumni.

“It became clear that we needed to engage more with our constituents,” says Trustee and SNIC Chair Terrance Carroll. “We learned through this process that there is a strong desire to select a name that keeps one foot in our heritage and one foot in our future. That meant keeping the word metropolitan in any new name.”

Corona Insights will send an email on Tuesday to a subset of students, alumni, faculty and staff, inviting them to participate in the eight-minute survey, which will run through Tuesday, Nov. 22. One-on-one interviews with community leaders will also be held during this time.

“The survey and interview results will help the board determine which name is most preferred, has the most support and best communicates the overall goals for the name change,” says President Stephen Jordan. “I strongly encourage everyone to participate.”

The results will be brought to the trustees at their Dec. 1 meeting and they will vote on a name for the state legislature to consider in January.

Watch for a Special Edition @Metro on Dec. 1 to announce the board’s decision.
