UCAN Serve Program offers scholarships for service

Apr 22, 2009

The Metro State UCAN Serve Program is offering students scholarships of up to nearly $2,400 for unpaid service through internships, student teaching, clinical placements and volunteering.

UCAN Serve is a campus-based AmeriCorps program, funded by the federal Corporation for National and Community Service, with sites in Colorado, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Metro State has partnered with Colorado Campus Compact (CCC), a nonprofit organization that works with colleges in the Rocky Mountain Region on service learning and civic engagement programs, to implement UCAN Serve.

The UCAN Serve scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $2,363, can be used to pay for tuition and fees at Metro State or other colleges or universities, to pay back student loans or be saved for graduate school or other continued education. Students may serve at any nonprofit, faith-based, municipal, or governmental organization or public school, from anywhere between 300 hours to 900 hours in one or two years.Students can also become involved in UCAN Serve through course- based service-learning experiences, student leadership groups, honor societies, sororities, fraternities or independent volunteerism.

“The kids that I worked with were amazing and seemed to really benefit from the work I did with them,” says Lauren Smiley, who went through the program in 2008. “Seeing them grow was the most satisfying part of my UCAN Serve experience.”

President Stephen Jordan has repeatedly emphasized the importance of providing meaningful civic engagement opportunities to students as a way to build partnerships with the community, provide service and develop opportunities for deeper learning and student growth.

“It is my hope to create not only a college of learners, but also better citizens who have an increased sense of personal and social responsibility,” he says.
